Unlock Your Roof’s Full Potential

Flat roofs provide a practical and versatile space that can be used for various purposes, such as lowering heat absorption into the interior space by applying reflective roof coatings (which can significantly lower energy bills), outdoor living areas, green roofs, and solar panels. However, choosing the right material for your flat roof can be challenging, as different materials have varying costs, durability, and maintenance requirements.

At Indiana Roof Experts, we specialize in two main types of flat roofing material: EPDM and TPO. Continue reading to learn more about the differences between the two, or contact us today for a consultation.

TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin)

Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO) roofing is a single-ply roofing membrane that is made of a blend of rubber and plastic materials. It is lightweight, durable, and resistant to UV rays, punctures, and chemicals. TPO roofing is easy to install and maintain, it can last up to 30 years, and is generally the more economical option.

Unfortunately, it may be susceptible to tears and punctures from foot traffic or debris. A common reason for punctures in all types of single-ply roofing is debris or hardware (like nails or screws) left on the roof that then gets stepped on creating small holes through which water can leak.

TPO is most commonly manufactured with a white color, making it light-reflecting and therefore will save you money on your cooling costs.

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) roofing is a single-ply roofing membrane that is made of synthetic rubber material. It is durable, weather-resistant, and can withstand extreme temperatures. EPDM roofing is easy to install and maintain and can last up to 50 years.

EPDM is most commonly manufactured with a black color, making it light-absorbing. This will save you money on your heating costs. The black color is also better suited for visible roofs since it doesn’t show as much dirt.
